CPCS A04 Tower Crane

How is the course taught and assessed?

Our tutors will provide training, bringing their expertise and experience to the classroom. Student assessments will be based on both classroom discussions, theory and practical examinations.

Who should take this course?

This course is appropriate for those students who have no previous knowledge or training on the operation of tower cranes. It is also a suitable course for those current operators who require a refresher course.

There are 2 separate certifications, relevant to different types of equipment

  • A04A: Trolley Jib
  • A04B: Luffing Jib

What qualification will I receive?

Upon successful course completion, students will be certified by the CITB National Construction College. Once CPCS Technical Tests have been completed successfully, candidates will be awarded a CPCS Red Trained Operator Card.

What can I do next?

Upon successful completion of the CPCS A04 Tower Crane Course, you may advance onto the Slinger/Signaller course, Appointed Person course, or perhaps progress to the CPCS Blue Competent Operator Card.

Entry requirements

Previous award of a CITB Health, Safety and Environment (HS&E) test in the last 2 years of the course date. An ability to work easily at height plus a good understanding of both spoken and written English.

Course Content
  • The safe and productive operation of the Tower Crane
  • Establish the capability and safe loading levels of the Tower Crane
  • Reaction to recognisable signals when in control of the crane
  • Be able to adjust and maintain the equipment
  • Knowledge of the required safety precautions and crane capabilities
  • Understand how to operate warning devices and safe-load indicators
  • The influences of the lifting capacity of the crane, and the working radius
  • How to balance the load securely, and use the lifting gear and slinging in a safe manner
  • Have an understanding of your legal responsibilities and statutory regulations regarding lifting equipment.
  • Knowledge of shock loading, working radius and counter-weights
