How is the course taught and assessed?

This CPCS A21 Wheeled Loading Shovel course uses a combination of both classroom discussions and practical tutorials with final assessments being conducted by both practical and theory tests.

Who should take this course?

This course is suitable for any experienced operators requiring a refresher course, plus any potential operatives who have no previous training in the handling of a Wheeled Loading Shovel.

What qualification will I receive?

Upon successful course completion, students will be awarded the CITB National Construction College certificate, and once the CPCS Technical Tests are completed, the CPCS Red Trained Operator Card will be granted.

Entry requirements

Prior completion of a CITB Health, Safety and Environment test (HS&E) within the previous 2 years. A good understanding of spoken and written English is also a requirement.

Upon successful completion of the CPCS A21 Wheeled Loading Shovel course, operatives may apply for one of the following courses:

  • Excavator 360 Tracked above 10 tonnes
  • Dump Truck
  • Excavator 180 Wheeled

Course Content
  • Knowledge of pre-start up and running inspections, in addition to the procedures for shut down of equipment
  • Safe mounting and dismounting
  • Awareness of safety precautions relative to overhead and underground services
  • Formation of the wheeled loading shovel for use both on-site and on-road travel
  • Placement of equipment when out of service
  • Knowledge of different excavation types of loads, volumes and materials, plus understanding of how to create ramps and stockpiles from diverse materials on an embankment
  • Safe loading and unloading, integrity of load and equipment and operative security
