How is the Course Taught and Assessed?

The course is taught through a combination of classroom-based discussions and practical exercises & tutorials. After the course of four to five days, there will be a theoretical and a practical assessment of what you’ve learnt.

Who should take this course?

The course is aimed at potential and existing operators of Pedestrian Operated Cranes who have no prior formal training. The course offers two specialised machinery subtypes: A63A: Up to 36m-100m/te and A63B: Inclined jib.

What Qualifications Will I Receive?

Upon successful completion of the course, the participating operators will be awarded with a CITB National Construction College certificate, and upon completion of the CPCS Technical Tests, the CPCS Red Trained Operator Card.

Entry Requirements

Applicants are required to have passed the CITB Health, Safety and Environment (HS&E) test within the last two years. A good level in spoken and written English is also required.

What Can I Do Next?

All the candidates who successfully complete the course are able to pursue courses for the roles of Telescopic Handler, Slinger/Signaller, Crawler Crane or for the Competent Operator Card.

  • How to operate the Pedestrian Crane safely and efficiently
  • How to respond to the recognised signals for controlling operations
  • Be able to decide whether a particular load is within the capability of the pedestrian crane or not
  • Proper crane maintenance and minor adjustments instruction
  • How to safely set the crane out of service procedure and understand the relevant equipment safety precautions
  • Thoroughly understanding the effects of working radius and the lifting capacity
  • How to secure, check and maintain counterweights
  • Hazard recognition and awareness
  • The effect of shock loading on structural strength & stability
  • Understanding of the basic principles of safe slinging and the capacities of the lifting gear
  • Relevant regulations and Codes of Practice (inc. operator’s legal responsibility)
